San Diego, California is the epitome of what Southern California represents. The sunny weather, amazing waves, and laid back attitude make tourists never want to leave. We spent a weekend after Christmas in the La Jolla district. The weather was in the high 60’s/ low 70’s which was a nice treat. Read below to see what we recommend for a weekend getaway to San Diego.

Visit Black’s Beach

Black’s Beach is a beach in La Jolla that is positively gorgeous! It’s underneath the bluffs of Torrey Pines which means that you have to hike down a moderately difficult trail. The trail is maintained by locals and surfers. One interesting fact about Black’s Beach that we were unaware of until we arrived is that it is a nude beach. We didn’t see many nude people and were perfectly comfortable on the beach. It honestly reminded us of European beaches. It was a great place to fly Harry’s drone.

Visit La Jolla Cove

La Jolla Cove is beautiful! It’s a vibrant area filled with tourists, locals, and seals. Seriously, seals were laid all over the rocks. Tourists can just walk up to them, but remember to always give wild animals their space as to not interfere with their lifestyle. We saw whales jumping from the coast which was also amazing. No surfing is allowed here due to the rocky coastline. A tip we wish we would’ve known is: You should park near the cove and walk down. The parking and traffic in the cove area was somewhat of a nightmare.

Visit Mt. Soledad Veteran’s Memorial

The memorial honors living and deceased veterans beginning with the Revolutionary War. The views from the Memorial are incredible. You can see Mexico, downtown San Diego, and beautiful water.

Visit Pacific Beach & Pacific Beach Pier

You will have a very relaxed feeling at Pacific Beach. It checked every expectation of So Cal beaches. To walk on the pier is free. From here you can see hundreds of surfers, seals, and fisherman. There are also places to rent at the start of the pier. We chose to ride Birds along the path following the beach. It was a lot of fun! The houses in this area are breathtaking.

Visit Cabrillo National Monument

Cabrillo National Monument is located at the southern tip of the Point Loma Peninsula. It honors fallen military veterans. It is such a beautiful place to honor our fallen soldiers.

Visit Hotel Del Coronado aka “The Del”

Hotel Del Coronado is located in the town Coronado. Owned and operated by Hilton Hotels now, it is one of the oldest hotels in the nation, having survived the Great Depression. The hotel is one of the largest wooden structures in the USA. The hotel is believed to have a haunted room, which is the most requested room in the hotel, in which a woman killed herself in 1892. We walked the grounds then found a seat at the beach bar to grab a drink and watch the sunset.

Visit the Gaslamp District

This is the heart of downtown San Diego. Its streets are bustling and hip. We found a brewery, Resident Brewing, to grab a pre-dinner drink. Afterwards, we grabbed amazing seafood at Gaslamp Fish House. You will need to make reservations to eat here.

Visit Eppig Brewing Company

Eppig Brewing is located in a harbor with views of yachts and beautiful water. The beer is light and German-style. They do have some IPAs on tap. The atmosphere is relaxing and friendly. We met some locals who suggested we walk a block to grab seafood to-go at Point Loma Seafood. It was such a relaxing lunch!

Visit the University of California San Diego (UCSD) campus

This college campus is beautiful. We came to check out the Geisel Library dedicated to Dr. Seuss. This is because he attended school at UCSD. The library is very large and creatively designed.

Eat Authentic Mexican Food

San Diego is so close to Mexico that the Mexican food is authentic. There are taco shops and Mexican restaurants all over. We recommend that you grab tacos.

Our Engagement

To add a personal touch to this blog post, Harry and I got engaged during our weekend getaway! It was a wonderful surprise. Lauren thought Harry was going to fly his drone on the beach, but he had other plans first. San Diego is certainly a romantic destination for couples.
