Tips for Letting go, Relaxing & Embracing Travel

White Cream Pastel Daily Motivation (1)

Travel. It should be exciting, fun, and care-free, but if you’re like me (Lauren) you may find it overwhelming at times. I’m a naturally structured person, preferring routine and consistency on a day-to-day basis. I also find I can be fearful and anxious in new situations, likely due to my desire for structure and to know what to expect. With all of that said, I clearly travel as often as possible and have a blast every single time. How do I do this you ask? Read my five tips below!

Tip #1: Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a method of thinking and being present in the moment. I practice different mindfulness techniques regularly as it is, and even more often while traveling. This can take the form of deep breathing, visualizing, and many other practices to help you be present in the moment. I encourage you to read about it or check out the app, HeadSpace, as a kickstart to practicing mindfulness.

Pro tip: If you are fearful of flying, mindfulness techniques WILL help you! Just try them out a few weeks in advance so that you are comfortable with focusing on the present.

Tip #2: Get Plenty of Rest

Sleep deprivation can cause many negative feelings including anxiety and anger. Ensure before your trip and while your away that you are allowing yourself plenty of rest. I’ve begun to limit myself to one movie on overnight flights while I eat, and the rest of the time I devote to sleeping or at least attempting to sleep. This helps greatly. While cat naps might be necessary while you’re away, if you allow yourself to rest enough you can avoid jet lag and adjust your body more adequately to the new time zone. Not traveling abroad? You still need plenty of rest to have the energy to explore and immerse yourself in your new location!

Tip #3: Visit a Local Eatery

The best way to feel at home in a new place is to grab a bite to eat or a tasty beverage at a local eatery. I find that this takes the nervousness away from me because I’m meeting at least one local (my server) and hearing about the area from them. My advice is to drop your bags, unpack, and head out upon arrival. If you need to take a cat nap, do so after you partake in this tip!

Tip #4: Visit a Place of Worship

If you’re religious you may find it comforting to visit a place of worship or to read scripture. Many churches and other places of worship are open to the public. You can also bring your scripture with you or look-up verses online. Often times if your religious, you’re comforted after simply praying.

Tip #5: Have Trust

Sometimes our stress or feelings over being overwhelmed won’t dissipate. When this happens, I find it helpful to just “let go,” and trust that things will work out. Through every adventure, every travel mishap, and every silly surprise I have always gained something valuable. Don’t let your fear, anxiety, or feelings of stress keep you from living the life you want to live.
