Our Weekend in San Francisco, CA

Harry and I knew we wanted to plan a weekend trip somewhere in June because we had earned a free night’s stay through the hotels.com rewards program. After much discussion we decided on San Francisco. I had never been to California and some cool weather sounded like a nice break from sweltering Georgia. We hopped on an early morning flight the next day and arrived in San Fran around 10:45 a.m.

We took BART, the public transportation system, from the airport to downtown for $10 a person. From Bart we walked a few blocks to our lovely hotel, The Intercontinental Mark Hopkins. We loved the hotel very much and found their concierge to be very helpful!

Chinatown

We decided to spend the day walking all over San Francisco with our first stop being Chinatown. This was hands-down what I was most excited about seeing for a variety of reasons. We were starving due to the time difference, and ate at the first restaurant we came across, Floating Sushi Boat. We enjoyed the restaurant, but agreed we wished we would’ve waited to eat somewhere deeper in the heart of Chinatown. The energy was very vibrant in Chinatown, and we enjoyed stopping in the local shops.

Transamerica Pyramid & Transamerica Redwood Park

Because Harry is obsessed with buildings and good views, our next stop was the infamous Transamerica Pyramid. It turns out that the former observation deck is now closed to visitors, but we did get a great look at the building and discovered a hidden treasure- the Tansamerica Redwood Park. This tiny park made you quickly forget that you were in the center of bustling San Francisco. We rested in the park and did some interesting people watching before we took off on the next leg of our day-journey.

Fisherman’s Wharf

We continued our walk through the hilly city towards the flatter coastline along the San Francisco Bay. The views were beautiful and the weather was perfect as we walked from Pier 1 all the way to Fisherman’s Warf. This walk is not for the faint of heart, and we had no regrets changing into comfortable walking shoes upon checking into the hotel. Pier 39 was certainly geared towards tourists with almost every attraction imaginable. You also get a great view of Alcatraz.   If you want to take a tour of this State Park, you need to plan your trip much farther in advance. We were unable to go during our trip because the next available tour for Alcatraz was the following week.

We came across Wines of California Wine Bar and indulged in a California wine tasting to relax and rest our legs. I would definitely recommend this place because it sits on the pier, overlooking beautiful sailboats. The wine was worth every penny.

By the time we reached Fisherman’s Wharf, we were pretty tired. We scoped out a place to eat dinner later that night, and enjoyed the beautiful view of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Cable Cars

Another unique thing about the city is one of their transportation options, cable cars. They are operated through the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA). A single ride costs $7, but there are a variation of ride options. We waited in a long line to get on the cable car at Fisherman’s Wharf; however, you can hop on at a later stop and pay for your ride after you hop on. This option is much faster. I sat at the bench facing outward, and Harry held on to the outside of the cable car. The cars don’t go too fast and it really is quite fun! We rode to the street that our hotel was on and hopped off. I was happy to check that item off of my bucket list. cable car

Top of the Mark

As I stated earlier, Harry loves a good view so it was perfect that our hotel had a rooftop bar and restaurant called Top of the Mark. After 6:00 p.m. there is a cover charge if you’re not staying at the hotel, but even still I would recommend this as a great place to eat tapas and relax after a long day of exploring. There was a very cozy atmosphere, and we got great views of the city & Bay.

Crissy Field

The Golden Gate Bridge is pretty far from downtown San Fran,so we recommend hailing an Uber, Lyft, Cable Car, or taxi to get there. It wasn’t important for us to drive over the bridge so we decided to take a Lyft to Crissy Field to score fantastic views the next morning. The fog had cleared by the time we arrived and we enjoyed admiring the beautiful landmark from the water’s edge. crissyfield

In-N-Out Burger

The last stop before we headed home was In-N-Out Burger at Fisherman’s Wharf. In short: the burger was great, and the fries were more bland than expected, but I was happy to say I’ve eaten there!

We thoroughly enjoyed our time in San Francisco and look forward to returning one day to check out more of the city & do the things we missed. One great option for city touring seemed like the Hop-on Hop-off bus tours. If you have questions about San Francisco or have tips for our future travel, leave a comment below the post!

Sincerely,

Brit+Belle
