Day Trip to Chicago
You know we are huge fans of day trips and exploring as many cities as possible. We don’t mind popping into a city for a day, but scheduling long layovers are especially fun in cities with public transportation. Lauren is a teacher and as her “back to school” trip, we decided to go to Chicago for the day! We went on a Wednesday because that’s generally a “good” day to travel since it’s in the middle of the work week. Let us tell you how we made the most of our day there.
Willis Tower
Harry always loves going to the top of the tallest buildings in the cities we visit, and Lauren loves to experience whatever cool views or attractions you can find at the top of them. Willis Tower, formerly known as Sears Tower, is the second tallest building in the United States at 1,450 feet tall. Because we went on a Wednesday morning there was absolutely no wait. We did see, though, that the queue can start at the outside of the building, so we are assuming this may happen on a weekend day. We explored the views at the top then went onto the Skydeck for a cool picture on the glass bottom floor.
Explore the French Market
The French Market is a 15 minute walk from Willis Tower, and had all the food and drink places your heart could desire. We went with Lauren’s Mom because her parents were in Chicago for a work trip. We enjoyed French rose’ and sharing a Chicago-style hotdog.
Eat Chicago-style pizza
Next, we headed to the pizzeria, Lou Malnati’s. Once we placed the order it took almost an hour to get our pizza. We were told this as we sat down, so it was no biggie. The pizza was inexpensive and extremely delicious!
Walk by the Lake
We decided to walk off our pizza by the lake. We walked through beautiful parks, enjoyed the breeze, and views. The amphitheater was setting up for a free concert for later that night, but we opted not to attend. There are many restaurants and shops along the shore, and many boating attractions you can participate in.
Walk through Millennium Park
One of the top tourist attractions is Millennium Park due to The Bean and the various fountains. The park is beautiful! While here, Harry rented a bike. We wished we would’ve rented them for the entire day, but by that point we were starting to slow down for the evening. 
Grab a drink at the Palmer House
The Palmer House is a Hilton Hotel, but is one of the most phenomenal and oldest hotel in Chicago. It has beautiful ceilings and artwork, but we chose to meet Lauren’s parents and uncle for a drink before heading to dinner.
LondonHouse Rooftop Bar
Remember when we said that Harry loves tall buildings? Of course we had to go to the LondonHouse Rooftop Bar. It is located directly across from Trump Tower and offers amazing views of the river. The drinks are pricey, but it’s worth it to go up for one. You must reserve a table or couch if you wish to sit, but we were happy to stand and walk around. We left and grabbed dinner at a great place down the street and called it a night.
While we know there was much more Chicago had to offer, we feel that the day trip was worth it because we hit a lot of major tourist attractions. We look forward to going back!
