So maybe you’re coming to Georgia for vacation, work, or visiting family. No matter your reason, Athens, GA needs to be on your list of places to visit while you’re here. Located about 70 miles from Atlanta, Athens is a small town packed with a lot of character and charm. Read this post to find out why you should visit Athens, GA.

Vibrant Music Scene

If you love music (and who doesn’t?) you’ll be pleased to visit Athens. Home to the B52s, REM, and other notable artists, you are sure to find talent at any show you see. No one genre is favored in Athens which means that you can find your perfect musical fit when you’re here. While the smaller concert venues are great options, I would recommend that you visit The Georgia Theatre or 40 Watt Club if there’s a headliner whose music you find interesting. Both of these venues are iconic in Athens.

College Town

Athens is home to The University of Georgia. If you’ve visited college towns before then you’ll know there’s something so vibrant about them. While you’re here you should take a walk along the beautiful North Campus of the University of Georgia, tour the school, or check out the art exhibits at The Georgia Museum of Art which is located on campus.

Delicious Restaurants

After living in Athens for most of my life and moving when I got married, I realized how much for granted I took the food scene in Athens. The chefs are very creative and the prices are fantastic. You can find great food in any of the Athens neighborhoods, but some of my go-to places are South Kitchen and Bar, and Cali N Tito’s, and Marker Seven Coastal Grill. I can assure you anywhere you visit will be fantastic, though.

Great Shopping

How can you visit Athens without doing a little shopping while you’re there? If you’re on a budget, or thrifting is your thing, you will have several stores from which to choose. There are also tons of cute and high-end boutiques as well. Similar to the restaurants in Athens, you can’t go wrong with the boutiques, but some of my favorites are Red Dress Boutique, Agora Vintage, Heery’s Clothes Closet, and Cheeky Peach.

Night Life

Athens reputation proceeds itself when it comes to nightlife. With over 80 bars in a square mile, the nightlife is one of the most famous attributes about this college town. There is a bar for everyone in Athens and for all age demographics (those that can drink of course). The bars are also very inclusive, so don’t worry about feeling like you won’t fit in. If you find that you don’t like a vibe at one place, worry not- there are 80 more from which to choose.

Unique Neighborhoods

As small of a town as Athens is, there are several unique neighborhoods.

Normal Town– Located near the UGA Health Science Campus and historic Boulevard. This quirky part of town has such fun and funky energy. It’s also very family-friendly.

Downtown– Located near historic North Campus of the University of Georgia. Downtown is home to a huge nightlife scene, amazing food, and fantastic shopping.

Five Points– Located about 2 miles from North Campus of the University of Georgia. This upscale part of Athens is home to the famous Milledge Ave, gorgeous family homes, and the cutest walkable strip of restaurants and shops.

East and West Sides– You will find locally owned restaurants here and quite a few parks. These are very residential and family-friendly parts of town.
