If you’re going to Cambodia you must visit Siem Reap. Not only is the town of Siem Reap really cool with local restaurants, bars, and markets, but it’s also home to the Angkor UNESCO World Heritage Site. Known for the famous, Angkor Wat, this site has multiple temples that have been important to the Hindu and Buddhist religions. We had the privilege of experiencing this awesome place when we visited Southeast Asia in Summer 2022.

Home to the famous Angkor Wat, this site is made up of numerous temples that were the center of the Khmer Kingdom from the 9th-15th centuries. We were so excited to visit and opted to take a guided tour. The sunrise tour allowed us to spend the entire day learning about the temples and the Buddhist and Hindu religions. I found this experience to be very eye-opening and life changing. As an American who grew up in the Bible Belt, I never knew much about either religion and enjoyed learning about them. I believe it helped me to better understand the culture of Cambodia, which was one of my favorite places we visited on our trek through Southeast Asia.

The sunrise tour was great because the guide picks you up in an air conditioned van right from your hotel. You get access to a knowledgeable guide and water all day- both are essential to have! Our guide was a former Buddhist monk who was able to shed light on so many things we otherwise would’ve not fully understood in the temples, such as the artwork and architecture. You have access to several of the temples on the tour. You can even pack your own food or enjoy breakfast at a local restaurant close to the temples. We opted to enjoy a traditional Cambodian breakfast that the van drove us to. You can book the tour here.

Things to Note When Visiting Angkor UNESCO World Heritage Site

  • Don’t eat as you walk through the temples. Monkeys may steal your food. You may drink water (and you will need plenty of it!)
  • Dress conservatively. Shoulders and knees should be covered when in the temples.
  • Bring a Camera. The site is magnificent. You’ll want to document so much! You can see pictures and videos from our trip on our Instagram.
Ta Prohm.
This tree will eventually be removed in order to protect the integrity of the temple.
